Asus EEE 701
Asus and Intel has joined the growing list of manufacturers of mini-laptops (including their own ClassmatePC) with their EEE-line of notebooks (stands for easy to learn, easy to play, easy to work) and the first to arrive is the EEE 701. While all the specifications are not yet revealed, it's an attractive 7", 2-pound sub-laptop with a still unspecified intel-chipset.

EeePC 701 Specification:
- Display 7"
- CPU & Chipset: Intel mobile CPU & chipset (900Mhz)
- OS: Linux/ Microsoft Windows XP compatible
- Communication: 10/100 Mbps Ethernet; 56K modem
- WLAN: WiFi 802.11b/g
- Graphic: Intel UMA
- Memory: 512MB, DDR2-400
- Storage: 4/ 8/ 16GB Flash
- Webcam: 300K pixel video camera
- Audio: Hi-Definition Audio CODEC; Built-in stereo speaker; Built-in microphone
- Battery Life: ~3hrs (4 cells: 5200mAh, 2S2P)
- Dimension & Weight: 22.5 x 16.5 x 2.1~3.5cm, 0.89kg

The thing that really seperates this sub-laptop from the crowd is it's dual mode ability. While it runs a full OS (Like XP or linux) it also offers a stripped down "Easy mode", mainly for surfing and such.

Another extremly good edge is the price: It's said to start from $199, which put's it between the OLPC and the ClassmatePC pricewise, while still being able to run the full version of Windows XP.

RE: Asus EEE 701
I saw this online on Asus.com come the other day! Asus' site didn't have much information on the actual specs of their EEE PC. Any idea of the release date? I also wonder what type of CPU it will use. Most likely something less than 1Ghz. I can totally picture buying something like this for a younger kid who wants a computer to use. A starting price of $199 is an incredible value! For that price, I may end up picking one up! Big Grin

Hunted down some more images for the EEE PC 701!

The following are pictures taken at Computex 2007:

Looks like Asus stuck with the style they are known for. Kind of looks like a mini white W3j. Tongue

RE: Asus EEE 701
It is quite cool. If it remains at $200-$300 and the HDD is big enough , I might get one instead of a 6th gen ipod.

RE: Asus EEE 701
I'm getting one for sure, if it is out by the end of summer. It is rumored to be out then... I even have a $175 gift certificate that will pay for most of it! Big Grin I still wonder if it will be possible to upgrade the 512MB's of RAM to 1GB. It should be easy to do as long as the RAM is not soldered into the actual motherboard. And then the only information publicly released so far about the CPU is that it will be Intel. Hope its 1Ghz or more!

RE: Asus EEE 701
I read in the same thread I posted at notebookreview that they might be 600MHz and 800 MHz derivatives of the Pentium M

RE: Asus EEE 701
I wouldn't be surprised. I guess if its of the Pentium M line, it wouldn't be that bad. Biased on the specs, it says it will use DDR2-400. So, I'm guessing that this means the CPU will have a FSB of 400Mhz also. I wonder how many watts the system is going to take up at full load? If it does use the McCaslin platform, looks like the CPU is only going to be using 3W's of power at full load! Amazing considering my Core 2 Duo is using ~105W's.

RE: Asus EEE 701
105W?! Is that including other hardware or just the CPU? Because that seems to high for a C2D...

RE: Asus EEE 701
105W is just the CPU. It's overclocked 85% thats why. I believe it uses about 65W's stock. But I have it overclocked from the stock 1.8Ghz to 3.2Ghz, so it uses a lot more power! Big Grin
